Blackfeet Indian Reservation Disaster Relief

posted on February 28

Multiple winter storms with record amounts of snow, high winds and subzero temperatures have impacted the state of Montana. According to, "Some parts of the Montana Rockies have seen more than 40 feet of snow this season so far, while some towns are seeing record snow."
In the Blackfeet reservation in northwestern Montana, which includes the email Blackfeet United Methodist Parish (BUMP), approximately 15,000 people were affected by these snow storms.  The Methodist Church's Yellowstone Conference has initiated a disaster response plan for the communities around BUMP, as the church has become an emergency shelter for those in need.
Some of the current needs that BUMP is requesting are:

  • Firewood and supplies, plus chainsaws
  • Water and food, including meats, potatoes, coffee, canned goods, baby food
  • Personal hygiene products, such as diapers, wipes, feminine care
  • Trucks, trailers, sleds and snowmobiles
  • Fuel (diesel and gas)
Short of spending time and money collecting items and finding a way to transport them the 860+ miles to BUMP the BUMC Mission Committee has decided that it would be more practical and efficient to have all our church members donate funds that we can send to the conference's Disaster Relief Fund specifically for BUMP and they can decide what greatest needs they have and use our donations accordingly
